Vols, Gators lead Swimming & Diving Championships

Athens, Ga. - The Tennessee men and Florida women lead the 2019 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships following the opening day of the event at Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium.

To begin the evening session, Juan Celaya-Hernandez of LSU retained his SEC title in the men's 1-meter springboard with a final score of 440.30. Sam Thornton of Texas A&M finished in second place with a score of 421.40, and Kyle Goodwin of Missouri placed third with a score of 392.35.

In the women's 200 medley relay, Tennessee's Megan Small, Nikol Popov, Madeline Banic and Erika Brown posted an SEC Championship meet record and the fastest time in the nation this season with a time of 1:34.26 to take first place. Missouri finished second with a time of 1:35.62, and Florida claimed third with a time of 1:35.64.

The SEC meet record was also set in the men's 200 medley relay as Alabama's Zane Waddell, Laurent Bams, Knox Auerbach and Robert Howard finished with the top time in the nation of 1:22.19. It marks the third time the Crimson Tide has was won the SEC title in this event, previously earning the gold medal in 1992 and 1994. Tennessee came in second (1:22.79), while Florida took third place (1:23.25).

Brooke Schultz of Arkansas won the women's 3-meter springboard for the second consecutive year with a final score of 410.40. Lizzie Cui of LSU claimed second place with a score of 388.40, and Brooke Madden of Florida placed third with a score of 350.80.

Texas A&M's Katie Portz, Claire Rasmus, McKenna DeBever and Sydney Pickrem won the Aggies' third consecutive SEC title in the women's 800 free relay with a top time of 6:54.46. Tennessee finished second (6:55.15), and Kentucky came in third (6:56.23).

Closing out the night, Florida's Trey Freeman, Khader Baqlah, Kieran Smith and Maxime Rooney set the SEC record in the men's 800 free relay with a final time of 6:10.50. Missouri earned second place with a time of 6:11.77, and Texas A&M finished third in a time of 6:16.63. Missouri's Mikel Schreuders set the SEC meet record in the 200 free with his leadoff split of 1:31.61.

Day two of the 2019 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships begins on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. ET with the prelims for the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and women's 1-meter, followed by the finals of those events along with the 200 free relay starting at 6 p.m. ET.
