ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- No. 8 Vanderbilt shut down No. 9 Georgia in the first round of the SEC Soccer Tournament on Monday to advance to quarterfinal play.

Two-time All-SEC forward Simone Charley scored her sixth goal of the season in the 39th minute on a breakaway goal off an assist by Kacy Scarpa to give the Commodores a 1-0 lead. Taylor Elliott then provided an insurance goal for the Commodores in the 69th minute. Elliott headed in her fourth goal of the season on a cross from Kelsey Tillman on the far sideline.

Georgia freshman Sydney Shultis made things interesting in the 79th minute, burying a rocket in the upper 90 from 18 yards out. The goal breathed new life into the Bulldogs, but the squad was unable to finish off the comeback.

Despite the loss, Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne liked the fight he saw in his team for 90 minutes.

"Unfortunately effort doesn't win games for you," Lesesne said. "We just didn't quite execute in the right parts of the field. They made it difficult, but we played hard. Not our best technical or tactical game, but I thought we battled until the end. That's what this team has really done over the past month or two."

Vanderbilt's win over Georgia was its first since 2006. Vanderbilt improves to 9-7-4 on the season, while Georgia's season concludes at 5-12-1.

Vanderbilt advances to play top-seeded Florida at 5:00 p.m., CT, Wednesday on SEC Network.
