Rebels win SEC Women's Golf Championship

HOOVER, Ala. -- Ole Miss won its first Southeastern Conference women's golf championship by defeating South Carolina 3-2 in the match play final Sunday at Greystone's Legacy Course.

Macy Somoskey, who lifted the Rebels to victory in all three of their match play contests by winning in a playoff, defeated South Carolina's Lois Kaye Go on the fourth playoff hole to give Ole Miss the title. Earlier in the day, it was her win on the third playoff hole against Georgia that put the Rebels into the match play championship.

"I think this puts us on the map a little bit," Ole Miss head coach Kory Henkes said. "I know we were the underdog coming in all week. We kept telling the girls to grind it out and stay patient, hit fairways and greens, make your pars. I'm so excited and so proud of this group. This is unbelievable."

This week marked the second consecutive year the championship featured match play. The tournament began on Tuesday with the first of three days of stroke play. Eight teams advanced to the match play portion of the championship. Ole Miss was the No. 8 seed coming out of stroke play, while South Carolina was the No. 2 seed.

South Carolina's Ana Pelaez defeated Ellen Hutchinson-Kay 6&5 to give the Gamecocks their first point, then Ole Miss tied the match when Kennedy Swann topped Emily Price 2-up.

Julia Johnson gave Ole Miss a 2-1 lead with her win over 2-up win over Marion Veysseyre, then the match was all square after Anita Uwadia birdied No. 18 to beat Conner Beth Ball. That set the stage for the sudden death playoff between Somoskey and Go.

This marked the seventh consecutive year for the SEC Championship to be contested at Greystone Golf and Country Club. For the second year in a row the final day was televised live on the SEC Network.
