Ole Miss runs away to 10th win by topping Alcorn State
OXFORD, Miss. - Wrapping up its non-conference slate, Ole Miss returned from its holiday break by with a lockdown defensive performance over Alcorn State in a 76-37 win from the SJB Pavilion on Saturday afternoon. For the third consecutive season, the Rebels have reached 10 wins in non-conference play.
A balanced attack from Ole Miss (10-3) on both sides of the ball, pushed the Rebels over the top of Alcorn State (2-9) in holding their seventh opponent to under 50 points this season. Ole Miss racked up a season-high 17 steals, its most since the 2022 SEC Tournament. The Rebels held its opponent to its fewest points of the season, only allowing 37 to the Lady Braves.
12 out of 14 to play for the Rebels scored, with Madison Scott leading the team with 11 points. Kennedy Todd-Williams added 10 points as well, as she and Scott currently ride four and three game streaks in double-figures. Todd-Williams also tied her career-high in snagging three steals. For the fourth time this season, Kharyssa Richardson reached double-digits with 10 points of her own and a career-high four steals.
Freshman Mariyah Noel totaled a career-best day with seven points, five rebounds and dished out four assists. As a team, Ole Miss racked up 15 assists on 24 made field goals. The Rebels took advantage of Alcorn's 22 turnovers, scoring 22 points off of them.
The Rebel defense came out rearing to go, disrupting Alcorn State in the first few minutes to snag a quick double-digit lead at 14-4. Forcing multiple turnovers against the Lady Braves, Ole Miss caused damage from the opposite end of the floor by hitting three triples in the opening quarter to lead 20-9.
Alcorn slowed down the pace of the game, yet Igbokwe turned it back up again in the paint with three consecutive buckets as Ole Miss continued to extend its lead in the second. Holding the Lady Braves scoreless the final two minutes of the half, the Rebels took off on a 6-0 run to remain ahead 39-21 at the break.
Ole Miss limited Alcorn State's opportunities to score, creating numerous turnovers in one of its best defensive performances of the season. An 8-0 run highlighted by J'Adore Young's first basket of her collegiate career, extended the Rebel advantage over the Lady Braves.
Restricting Alcorn to a mere 16 points in the second half, Ole Miss ran away to its 10th win to cap off non-conference play over the Lady Braves, 76-37.
Ole Miss begins the gauntlet of SEC play with a visit to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama in the conference opener, Thursday (Jan. 4). The Rebels aim for back-to-back wins against the Crimson Tide on SEC Network + at 6:30 p.m. CT.
