No. 10 seed Auburn upsets No. 2 seed Georgia 4-1

AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn women's tennis punched its ticket to the semifinals of the SEC Women's Tennis Tournament for the second straight season with a 4-1 upset over No. 4 Georgia on Friday in Nashville, Tenn. The Tigers will face top-ranked in the semifinal match on Saturday.

"This was a huge match for us," Auburn head coach Lauren Spencer said. "This was a complete team win today and I am extremely proud of the effort we gave from start to finish. Georgia was a team we really wanted another shot at after losing to them in the regular season. We came out and played to win and the girls took care of business. We will have to come out strong again tomorrow against a strong Florida team."

For the second-straight match, Auburn took the doubles point to jump out to an early 1-0 lead, with wins on court one and three. Ranked No. 46 in doubles, Georgie Axon and Caroline Turner were first off the court with a 6-1 win on court three. No. 18 Allie Michaud and Taylor Russo upset Georgia's No. 4 Caroline Brinson and Ellen Perez, 6-3 to clinch the point on court one.

With the score tied 1-1 in singles, the Tigers retook the lead after freshman No. 124 Taylor Russo took down No. 61 Kennedy Shaffer in straight sets on court three. Russo improves to 22-10 on the season and is second on the team with 18 dual-match victories.

Fellow freshman Georgie Axon improved to 5-1 against ranked opponents with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 63 Caroline Brinson on court four. The England native improves to 23-10 on the season.

Alannah Griffin clinched the match for the Tigers with a dominant 7-5, 6-0 on court six. Griffin has now won five straight matches and improves to 16-11 on the season.

Auburn's match against Florida is set begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Nashville, Tenn.
