Mizzou, A&M pull ahead at SEC Championships

Athens, Ga. - The Missouri men and Texas A&M women are in the lead at the 2019 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships following day two of the event at Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium.

To begin the evening session, Courtney Harnish of Georgia won the women's 500 freestyle with the fastest time in the nation this season of 4:35.52. Leah Braswell of Florida took second place with a time of 4:36.81, while Geena Freriks of Kentucky placed third with a time of 4:37.04.

Fynn Minuth of South Carolina became the three-time SEC Champion in the men's 500 freestyle with his top time of 4:11.98. Florida claimed the next two podium spots with Trey Freeman finishing 4:12.80 and Khader Baqlah coming in at 4:12.96.

In the women's 200 IM, Meghan Small of Tennessee, who previously won the event in 2017, set the SEC meet record with her winning time of 1:51.62. Sydney Pickrem of Texas A&M took second with a time of 1:51.66, and Emma Barksdale of South Carolina finished third with a time of 1:53.27.

Kieran Smith of Florida earned the gold medal in the men's 200 IM with a time of 1:43.13. Nick Alexander of Missouri came in second with a time of 1:43.15 and Javier Acevedo of Georgia took third with a time of 1:43.29.

Erika Brown of Tennessee broke the NCAA and SEC meet record in the women's 50 free with her final time of 21.15. This marks the second consecutive year that Brown won the SEC title in this event. Second place went to Anna Hopkin of Arkansas (21.58) and third to Claire Fisch of Auburn (21.65).

Robert Howard of Alabama swam the fastest time in the nation in the men's 50 free with a time of 18.74. Kyle Decoursey of Tennessee took second (18.95) and Mikel Schreuders of Missouri finished third (19.24).

Brooke Schultz of Arkansas defended her SEC title in the women's 1-meter springboard with a final score of 359.35. LSU's Lizzie Cui (349.35) and Aimee Wilson (316.85) took second and third, respectively.

The SEC meet record was set in the women's 200 free relay by the foursome of Madeline Banic, Stanzi Moseley, Bailey Grinter and Brown from Tennessee with a time of 1:26.51. The SEC record was also set on the men's side, as the quartet of Zane Waddell, Sam DiSette, Jack Blake and Howard of Alabama took home the gold in the men's 200 free relay with a final time of 1:15.43.

The 2019 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships continues on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. ET with the preliminaries for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free and the women's 3-meter diving, followed by the finals of those four events starting at 6 p.m. ET. Both sessions can be viewed on SEC Network+.
