Gators take six-shot lead at women's golf championship

HOOVER, Alabama - Florida's women's golf team, ranked No. 12 in the latest Golfstat rankings and No. 10 in Golfweek, stormed into the sole lead at the SEC Women's Golf Championship at Greystone's Legacy Golf Course on Thursday, carding a 5-under par 283 in the second round of play. The Gators improved their score from the opening round by one stroke and are now 9-under par for the tournament (567) and lead the field by six strokes. The top eight teams after three rounds of stroke play will advance to match play which begins on Saturday.

South Carolina finds itself in second place entering the third round at 3-under par (573). Arkansas is currently third with 578. The Gators and Gamecocks are the only two teams in the field currently under par after two rounds of play. Auburn, the co-leader with Florida after the opening round of play, fell to fifth place after a second-round, 10-over par 298.

Marta Perez SanMartin led the way for Florida on Thursday with a 4-under par 68 to finish the second round as the overall individual leader at 7-under par (137). Maria Fassi of Arkansas also shot a 68 on Thursday and currently stands in second place with a 5-under par 139. The tournament's individual champion will be determined and recognized after the third and final round of stroke play on Friday.

This marks the seventh consecutive year for the Southeastern Conference Championship to be held at the Greystone Golf and Country Club just outside of Birmingham, Alabama. The 2019 event will mark the second straight in which the championship will extend to five days, with Match Play on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21. Three rounds of stroke play will occur the opening three rounds of the SEC Championship. The championship match on Sunday, April 21 will be televised live on SEC Network.

Rain, thunderstorms and possible severe weather are forecast overnight in the Birmingham area. The third round the SEC Championship is slated to begin Friday at 8 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available at www.SECsports.com and www.golfstat.com.
