Gators, Lady Vols win 2022 SEC Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (February 19, 2022) - The Florida men and Tennessee women are the winners of the 2022 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships, held at Tennessee's Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.

The Lady Vols earned their second SEC title in three years in women's swimming & diving with a final score of 1,313.5 points. Kentucky came in second with 1,043 points. The Gators won their 10th consecutive and 43rd overall title in men's swimming & diving with a total score of 1,414 points. Alabama and Tennessee tied for second place with 938 points each.

The Commissioner's Trophy, which is awarded to the student-athletes who score the most individual points at the championships, went to Ellen Walshe of Tennessee and Luca Urlando of Georgia. Walshe and Urlando were also named the SEC Swimmers of the Meet. Brooke Schultz of South Carolina and Juan Celaya-Hernandez of LSU were named the SEC Divers of the Meet.

The final night of the championships began with Kristen Stege of Tennessee defending her title in the women's 1650 free with a time of 15:42.37. Kensey McMahon of Alabama came in second with a time of 15:51.71, and Abigail McCulloch of Georgia placed third with a time of 15:51.96.

Trey Freeman of Florida touched the wall first in the men's 1650 free with his time of 14:39.74. Jake Magahey of Georgia finished second with a time of 14:40.20, and Tyler Watson of Florida took third with a time of 14:40.45.

Rhyan White of Alabama captured the top spot the women's 200 back for the third consecutive year with her time of 1:50.22. Kentucky took the next two podium spots, with Caitlin Brooks earning the silver with a time of 1:50.73 and Sophie Sorenson securing the bronze with a time of 1:52.22.

In the men's 200 back, Kieran Smith of Florida posted the top time of 1:39.51. Texas A&M claimed the next two podium spots with Ethan Gogulski in second with a time of 1:39.58, and Anze Erzen in third with a time of 1:40.31.

Alabama swept the medals in the women's 100 free. Morgan Scott defended her title in the event with her winning time of 47.32. Second place went to Kalia Antoniou with a time of 47.67, and Diana Petkova took third with a time of 47.82.

In the men's 100 free, Brooks Curry of LSU broke Caeleb Dressel's SEC Championship meet record time with a time of 40.99. Jordan Crooks of Tennessee finished second with a time of 41.64, followed by Adam Chaney of Florida with a time of 41.83.

Gillian Davey of Kentucky touched the wall first in the women's 200 breaststroke with her time of 2:06.21. Zoie Hartman of Georgia finished second with a time of 2:06.27, and Mona McSharry of Tennessee placed third with a time of 2:07.29.

Derek Maas of Alabama set the SEC Championship meet record in the men's 200 breaststroke with his winning time of 1:51.56. Second place went to Reid Mikuta of Auburn (1:52.09) and third place to Bustaman Puente of Texas A&M (1:52.77).

Tanesha Lucoe of Alabama captured first place in the women's platform with a final score of 304.10. Helle Tuxen of LSU recorded 303.15 points to earn second place, and Kyndal Knight of Kentucky took third with 289.95 points.

In the 400 free relays, Alabama won the women's event for the second consecutive year with a pool record time of 3:10.36, while Florida won the men's race with a pool record time of 2:46.91 to close out the meet.
