Bama men, UGA women lead Track and Field Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.----- The Alabama men and Georgia women currently lead the 2016 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships following the opening day of competition Thursday at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium on the campus of the University of Alabama.

The Alabama men currently lead the way with 15 total team points while Ole Miss is second with 13 and Georgia is third with 12.

The Georgia women hold the lead with 12 team points, while Ole Miss is second with 11 and Tennessee and Kentucky are tied for third with 10.

Texas A&M's Lindon Victor set an SEC first-day points record in the men's decathlon with a total of 4,309. Georgia's Maicel Uibo, the three-time defending SEC decathlon champion, is second with 4,196 points, while the Bulldogs' Devon Williams is third with 4,187.

Mississippi State's Erica Bougard currently holds the lead in the women's heptathlon with a total of 3,776. Texas A&M's Annie Kunz is second with 3,678 points, while Arkansas' Alex Gochenour is third with 3,667.

Kentucky's Beckie Famurewa captured the women's hammer throw title with a toss of 64.05m/210-1. Georgia's Shelby Ashe was second with a mark of 63.79m/209-3, while Alabama's Danielle McConnell was third with a 59.82m/196-3.

Florida freshman Anders Eriksson won the SEC men's hammer throw with a toss of 69.62m/228-5. Georgia's two-time defending champion Alex Poursanidis was second with a 68.68m/225-4, and Ole Miss' Dempsey McGuigan was third with a 68.55m/224-11.

Georgia's Alex Poursanidis defended his title in the SEC men's hammer throw with a toss of 68.24m/223-11. He becomes the first repeat athlete in the event since LSU's Walter Henning won three in a row from 2009-2011. Ole Miss' Dempsey McGuigan was second with a toss of 66.90m/219-6, while Florida's Kyle Strawn - the 2013 SEC Champion in the event - was third with a throw of 65.23m/214-0.

Tennessee's Chelsea Blaase won the women's 10,000-meter run in a time of 34:00.47. She finished ahead of Ole Miss' Emily Bean (34:08.16), while Arkansas' Valerie Reina was third with a 34:13.11.

Kentucky's Jacob Thomson claimed the SEC men's 10,000-meter run in a time of 29:47.89. Alabama's Antibahs Kosgei was second in 29:49.16, while Arkansas' Gabe Gonzalez was third in 29:50.01.

The SEC Outdoor Championships continue on Friday beginning at 9 a.m. CT. Adult single day tickets are $10, while student single day tickets are $5. VIP adult tickets are $15 and VIP student single day tickets are $10.
