Record-setting day two at SEC Outdoor Championships
STARKVILLE, Miss. - A collegiate record in the women's pole vault by Arkansas' Sandi Morris on Friday highlighted the second day of the 2015 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Mississippi State University at the Mike Sanders Track Complex. The Florida men and Arkansas women currently hold the team leads in the competition entering the final day.
The SEC Outdoor Championships continue with the final day on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. CT. All-session tickets are $20 for adults and free for those 18 and under. Single-day tickets are $10 for adults and free for those 18 and under.
The Florida men lead the team standings with 50 total team points, while Georgia is second with 47 and Arkansas is third with 36. Kentucky (4th, 27) and Texas A&M (5th, 24) round out the men's top-five through seven of 21 events scored.
The Arkansas women lead the team standings with 58.5 total team points, while Georgia is second with 46 and Texas A&M is third with 37. Kentucky (4th, 32) and Alabama (5th, 31.50) round out the women's top-five through eight of 21 events scored.
Morris captured the SEC women's pole vault championship with a leap of 4.72m/15-5.75. She broke the previous collegiate record of 4.71m/15-5.50 set by Stephen F. Austin's Demi Payne on May 9, 2015. Teammate Ariel Voskamp was second at 4.34m/14-2.75, while Georgia's Morgann Leleux was third at 4.34m/14-2.75.
Mississippi State's Erica Bougard claimed the SEC women's heptathlon title with a final score of 6,250. She set SEC heptathlon meet records in three different events, including breaking the SEC meet record of 5,969 set by LSU's Sharon Jaklofsky in 1991. Georgia's Kendell Williams was second with a score of 6,003, while Arkansas' Alex Gochenour was third with a score of 5,892.
Georgia's Maicel Uibo became the third athlete in SEC history to win three consecutive decathlon titles. He claimed the event with a meet-record total of 8,326. Uibo broke the previous meet record score of 8,126, set by LSU's Mikael Olander in 1988. Mississippi State's Zach Taylor was second with a total of 7,466, while South Carolina's Markus Leemet was third with 7,372 points.
Florida's Stipe Zunic won his second consecutive SEC men's outdoor shot put title with a toss of 19.95m/65-5.50. He became the first repeat winner of the vent since Auburn's Stephen Saenz in 2011 and 2012. Georgia's Nick Vena was second with a throw of 19.47m/63-10.50 and Kentucky's Brad Szypka was third at 19.44m/63-9.50.
Florida's Marquis Dendy won the SEC men's long jump crown with a mark of 8.19m/26-10.50. Arkansas' Jarrion Lawson was second with a leap of 8.00m/26-3, while Florida's KeAndre Bates was third at 7.97m/26-1.75.
Alabama's Quanesha Burks won her school's first SEC outdoor women's long jump title since 1990 with a leap of 6.84m/22-5.25, which tied the SEC meet record set in 2008 by Olympic Champion and former Ole Miss athlete Brittney Reese. LSU's Nataliyah Friar was second with a mark of 6.67m/21-10.75 and Georgia's Keturah Orji was third at 6.61m/21-8.25. The women's long jump field featured the finest competition in the nation as five of the top-six finishers on Saturday ranked among the nation's top-eight entering this weekend's championship.
Arkansas' Stanley Kebenei won the SEC men's steeplechase championship for the second consecutive year in a time of 8:58.40. Kebenei becomes the first repeat winner in the event since Georgia's Matt Cleaver in 2011 and 2012. Florida's Mark Parrish was second in 8:59.06, while Auburn's Redatu Semeon was third in 9:00.14.
Arkansas' Jessica Kamilos captured the SEC women's steeplechase championship in a time of 10:02.07. It is the third consecutive title for the Razorbacks in that event, as Grace Heymsfield won in 2013 and 2014. Mississippi State's Cornelia Griesche was second in 10:04.00, while Georgia's Bret McDaniel was third in 10:08.28.
Texas A&M's Shelbi Vaughan won her third consecutive SEC women's discus title, breaking her own meet record with a throw of 64.52m/211-8. Kentucky's Beckie Famurewa was second at 57.13m/187-5, while her UK teammate Madison Jacobs was third with a mark of 56.03m/183-10.
South Carolina's Jeannelle Scheper won the women's high jump championship with a leap of 1.96m/6-5, shattering the previous meet record of 1.92m/6-3.50 set last year by Georgia's Leontia Kallenou. It was South Carolina's first-ever SEC Outdoor Championship in the event. Kallenou was second at 1.93m/6-4, while Florida's Taylor Burke was third at 1.80m/5-10.75.
