Alabama starts strong in SEC Women's Golf Championship

HOOVER, Alabama -- The No. 1 ranked Alabama women's golf team carded a 2-under par 286 on Wednesday and stands in first place after the opening round of the SEC Women's Golf Championship at Greystone's Legacy Golf Course. The Crimson Tide was the only squad to shoot under par on the tournament's opening day, as clear skies but windy conditions dominated the first round of play.

Kristen Gillman led the way for Alabama with a 3-under par 69 to finish day one as the overall individual leader.

No. 9 South Carolina is second on the team leaderboard with a 3-over par 291, followed by No. 21 Vanderbilt (296) and No. 12 Florida (298). No. 2 Arkansas rounded out the Top 5 with a first-round 299.

Individually, there was a four-way tie for second place after one round, trailing the leader by one stroke. Louise Yu of Vanderbilt, Dylan Kim of Arkansas, Ainhoa Olarra of South Carolina and Maria Fassi of Arkansas all shot an opening-round 70. Kim was named SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday. Alabama's Cheyenne Knight is the only other player under par after a first-round 71.

This marks the sixth consecutive year for the Southeastern Conference Championship to be contested at the Greystone Golf and Country Club just outside of Birmingham, Alabama. The 2018 event will mark the first in which the championship will extend to five days, with Match Play on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22. Three rounds of stroke play will occur the opening three rounds of the SEC Championship. The championship match on Sunday, April 22 will also be televised live on SEC Network. The second round the SEC Championship will begin Thursday at 8 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available at www.SECsports.com and www.golfstat.com.
