Gamecocks storm to the lead at SEC Golf Championship

HOOVER, Alabama - South Carolina's women's golf team, ranked No. 9 in the latest Golfweek poll, stormed into the lead at SEC Women's Golf Championship at Greystone's Legacy Golf Course, carding a 3-over par 291 on Thursday in the second round of play. It was the second consecutive day with a 291 for the Gamecocks, who are now 6-over par for the tournament and lead the field by eight strokes. Georgia turned in the top round of the day at 2-over par with a score of 290. The top eight teams after three rounds of stroke play will advance to match play which begins on Saturday.

Ainhoa Olarra led the way for South Carolina with a 3-under par 69 on Thursday to finish the second round as the overall individual leader at 5-under par (139). Only four players in the field are even par or better after two rounds of play. The tournament's individual champion will be determined and recognized after the third and final round of stroke play on Friday.

No. 1 Alabama, the first round leader, is now second on the team leaderboard after a 16-over par 304 on Thursday, bringing their two-day total to 590. The Crimson Tide is followed by No. 2-ranked Arkansas (592), Georgia (596) and No. 12 Florida (599).

Individually, Maria Fassi of Arkansas comes in just one stroke off the leader at 4-under for the tournament after a second-round 70. Dylan Kim of Arkansas is third overall at 1-under par for the weekend and Alabama's Kristen Gillman sits at even par in fourth place.

This marks the sixth consecutive year for the Southeastern Conference Championship to be contested at the Greystone Golf and Country Club just outside of Birmingham, Alabama.

The 2018 event will mark the first in which the championship will extend to five days, with match play on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22. The championship match on Sunday, April 22 will also be televised live on SEC Network.
