Alabama men, Ole Miss women lead after Day 1
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Alabama men and Ole Miss women currently lead the 2017 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships following the opening day of competition Thursday at the Sheila & Morris Cregger Track on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
The Alabama men currently lead the way with 29 total team points while Georgia and Texas A&M are tied for second with 16. Missouri has 13, followed by Ole Miss (11), LSU (9) Mississippi State (8), Kentucky (6), Arkansas (3), South Carolina (3), Tennessee (2), Florida (1) and Auburn (0).
The Ole Miss women hold the lead with 15 team points, while Georgia is second with 13 and Tennessee and Missouri are tied for third with 10. Arkansas has eight, followed by Mississippi State (7), Auburn (6), Alabama (5), Texas A&M (3), Kentucky (1), Florida (0), LSU (0), South Carolina (0) and Vanderbilt (0).
Texas A&M's Lindon Victor set an SEC first-day points record in the men's decathlon with a total of 4,365. Arkansas' Taliyah Brooks currently holds the lead in the women's heptathlon with a total of 3,733.
Individual champions crowned Thursday were: Georgia's Denzel Comenentia in the men's hammer (71.40m/234-3), Georgia's Beatrice Llano in the women's hammer (65.55m/215-0), Texas A&M's Ioannis Kyriazis in the men's javelin (80.15m/262-11, meet record), Alabama's Alfred Chelanga in the men's 10,000 meter-run (30:25.24), and Missouri's Jamie Kempfer in the women's 10,000-meter run (33:52.19).
The SEC Outdoor Championships continue on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. ET. Tickets are available for purchase at GamecocksOnline.com, with all-session passes just $25 for adults and $10 for youth 18 and under.
