Aggies, Gators lead SEC championships after Day 3
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M women and the Florida men maintain their lead after day three of the 2018 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships at Texas A&M's Rec Center Natatorium.
On the women's side, the Aggies hold onto first place with a total of 737 points, while Tennessee is in second with 544.5 points. For the men, Florida stays in first with 595 team points, and Texas A&M is in second place with 527 points.
To begin the evening session, Sydney Pickrem of Texas A&M won the women's 400 IM for the third consecutive year and set a pool record with a time of 3:59.30. Fellow Aggie Bethany Galat took second with a time of 4:04.17, and Emma Barksdale of South Carolina finished third with a time of 4:05.66.
An SEC meet record was set in the men's 400 IM, as Hugo Gonzalez of Auburn claimed first place with a time of 3:35.76. Mark Szaranek of Florida came in second at 3:37.50, and Brandonn Almeid of South Carolina took third at 3:39.09.
Erika Brown of Tennessee set the SEC meet record in the women's 100 fly with her winning time of 49.85. Auburn claimed the silver and bronze with Haley Black in second at 50.68 and Alyssa Tetzloff in third at 51.32.
Jan Switkowski of Florida won the men's 100 fly with a time of 45.26. Texas A&M earned the next two podium spots with Mauro Castillo Luna in second place (45.63) and Jose Martinez in third (45.69).
Brooke Schultz of Arkansas completed her sweep of the springboard events, earning a first-place finish in the women's 3-meter with a total of 385.65. Julia Vincent of South Carolina came in second with a final score of 369.00, and Rachel Rubadue of Tennessee took third with a score of 366.40.
Claire Rasmus of Texas A&M took first place in the women's 200 free with her time of 1:43.62. Meghan Raab of Georgia claimed second with a time of 1:44.15, and Stanzi Moseley of Tennessee earned third place with a time of 1:44.88.
Khader Baqlah of Florida claimed the top spot in the men's 200 free with a time of 1:31.96, while fellow Gator Maxime Rooney took second (1:32.97) and Mikel Schreuder of Missouri earned third (1:33.24).
The 2018 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships continues on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. CT with the preliminaries for the 200 fly, 100 back, 100 breast and men's platform diving, followed by the finals of those four events plus the 400 medley relay starting at 6 p.m. CT. Both sessions can be viewed on SEC Network+.
